His work in printmaking is nationally recognized in its own right and through the influence he has had on countless students who have gone on to pursue careers in fine art. Ever mindful of the role of art in private and public collections, Grupp worked tirelessly to establish the permanent collection at Eide/Dalrymple Gallery on the campus of Augustana College in Sioux Falls, SD during his years as professor and chair of the Art Department. Networking with renowned printmakers to garner donations of their work for the Department's permanent collection and establishing a tradition among his students for donating the first work in each edition they were to ever print, Grupp built one of the most distinguished collections of fine printmaking in this region. Today, the collection is named in his honor and is housed in the Center for Visual Arts which he was instrumental in establishing. The Carl Grupp Collection continues growing today. Retired from teaching, Grupp continues creating. In recent years, his emphasis has been on exploring a diverse and lively color palette presented in subtly formed watercolor landscapes. Grupp's work is in private and public collections nation-wide including the Chicago Art Institute, Walker Art Center, Minneapolis; California College of Arts and Crafts, Oakland; South Dakota Art Museum, Brookings; and the Pillsbury Collection, Minneapolis. During the 1970s, Grupp was commissioned by the renowned Associated American Artists Gallery in New York, NY to create a work for the gallery's international clientele. In 2005 he was the recipient of the South Dakota Governor's Award for Distinction in Creative Achievement and in 2002, honored with the Mayor's Award for the Arts in Sioux Falls, SD. Most recently, Grupp's work has been juried into the Fifth Biennial Governor's Exhibition touring South Dakota. 1960-1964 Attended Minneapolis College of Art and Design, BFA, with a major in painting a minor in printmaking 1965 Attended Art Student Vrije Academie, The Hague, The Netherlands 1967-1969 Attended Indiana University, Bloomington, Indiana, MFA, printmaking major
